This week is National Apprenticeship Week 2024 (5 – 11 February). We wanted to reflect on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and businesses like us to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills. Bowen joined us here at The Box Group studying Operational Management for his apprenticeship. I had the pleasure of engaging in a discussion with Bowen to find out how he’s been progressing. Here’s his journey so far…
Which apprenticeship are you studying?
I am currently studying Operational Management Level five with City Skills. They are a fantastic company who provide a brilliant approach to the course.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I was given the opportunity to move into Projects and Operations within The Box Group, alongside an apprenticeship to further improve my core skills. I took this in a heartbeat. Any opportunity to learn is one I take! After It was explained how beneficial an apprenticeship can be and how much it differs from what people perceive it to be, I was more than onboard and eager to start.
When did you join The Box Group, and what attracted you to the business?
I joined The Box Group in 2022 within a sales role. I was immediately attracted to the proposal to join such an exciting business, and an incredible chance for growth, both personally and in my role, with so much to learn along the way. It was such a unique opportunity and I’m thrilled to be able to be a part of this dynamic company.
Tell us about your role, what does a typical day look like?
Good question! A typical day starts with progressing current projects. Once I am up to date with tasks, I work through all the smaller jobs which have been given to me, either throughout the week or that day. I intertwine these with project tasks and meetings to avoid getting bored and losing productivity. Some days will be sat at my desk, others halfway around the world ensuring a project gets delivered with my colleagues. No two days are the same as you said, but I wouldn’t want it any other way!
What have you learnt in your role as an apprentice, and what is your favourite part about working with The Box Group?
One of the key things I have learnt can be easily summed up with a quote from Marcus Aurelius ‘The gladiator puts down or takes up the sword he uses, but the boxer always has his hands and needs only to clench them into fists’. Being prepared for any potential problem that arises is the best way to solve it. Nothing beats having your hands at the ready, for when you will need them. My favourite part about working with The Box Group is definitely the team. It is an amazing group of individuals and it’s always a pleasure to work alongside them.
What would you say to others thinking about starting an apprenticeship?
Do it. I was worried about an apprenticeship being something for younger individuals, and that I would be the old one! I was so wrong. Having this opportunity to learn alongside like minded individuals who have all had different experiences and can assist you through any learning curve is unparalleled. There are people from all levels, of all ages on my course. It is just for people who want to expand their knowledge further and enjoy learning!
What are your plans for the future and on completion of your apprenticeship?
Upon completion I hope to have gained the knowledge and skills necessary to train to be a full time Project/Ops Manager at The Box Group. I am so lucky to be already involved in all of the opportunities we are currently facing and to be given such a high level of training. I will only return the favour in future, helping The Box Group team evolve and grow over the coming years.
