It’s a day to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the brave men and women who serve in the British Armed Forces. This annual commemoration taking place on Saturday 29th June, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our military personnel, who stand guard to protect our nation and our freedoms.
The first event was held on Saturday 27th June 2006, a date chosen to coincide with the day after the anniversary of the first investiture of the Victoria Cross in Hyde Park, London, in 1857. It serves as an opportunity for us to come together and recognise the selfless dedication, courage, and valour of our service members.
One of the most significant aspects of Armed Forces Day is its emphasis on unity and solidarity among the various branches of the military. It is a day when service members from different backgrounds and specialties join together to celebrate their shared commitment to duty, honour, and country. Through parades, ceremonies, and community events, the nation comes together to express their support for our troops and their families.
Whether through volunteering, sending care packages to deployed troops, or simply expressing gratitude to service members and veterans, there are countless ways for individuals to get involved and make a difference.
In addition to honouring those who currently serve, Armed Forces Day is also a time to remember and pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation. It is a day to reflect on the bravery and heroism of the countless men and women who have laid down their lives in service to our country and to ensure that their memory lives on in our hearts and minds.
On Armed Forces Day, let’s pause to reflect on the invaluable contributions of our military personnel. Their service and sacrifices each day safeguard our freedom and way of life. We express our deepest gratitude and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them, both at home and abroad, as they continue to uphold the highest standards of service and honour.
On behalf of a grateful nation, thank you to all those who serve in the British Armed Forces. Your dedication and sacrifice are truly appreciated, today and every day.
May we always remember: Freedom isn’t free, but it’s worth fighting for.
