Project Overview
Clients & Event: The Malachite Group & Made of You – Afro Nation 2025
Location: Praia da Rocha Beach, Portimão, Portugal
Event Dates: 9th – 11th July 2025
Attendance: 38,000 festival-goers over three days
Coverage Area: 12,740 sqm of temporary road infrastructure
Challenge: Creating heavy-duty beach access for construction vehicles and festival infrastructure
The Challenge
Afro Nation Portugal required a sophisticated temporary road solution to transform Praia da Rocha beach into a world-class festival venue. The unique challenge involved:
Site Complexity
- Shifting sand conditions requiring specialised installation techniques
- Beach environment with no existing hard surfaces for heavy vehicle access
- Multiple stages and infrastructure needing construction vehicle support
- Strict regulatory requirements from Portimão Municipal Council
Logistical Constraints
- Tight installation window: 6 days for initial setup with night shift operations
- Local authority restrictions: No heavy machinery during daylight hours
- Time-critical breakdown: 3 night shifts plus 4 days for removal
- Weather considerations: Potential sand storms during extraction phase
Technical Requirements
- Minimum 12.5-tonne axle weight capacity for construction vehicles and cranes
- Specialised installation method requiring panels to be laid in reverse configuration
- Precision coordination with limited beach access for other contractors
Our Solution
The Box Group deployed a comprehensive temporary road system combining two specialised products:
System Specifications
- SignaRoad panels: 2,100 units covering the majority of access routes
- MegaMat system: 208 panels (1,568m²) for specialised areas
- Total coverage: 12,740 sqm supporting complete festival infrastructure
Implementation Strategy
- Dual-team approach: 7 Box Group specialists + 8-10 local Portuguese crew members
- Equipment deployment: 3 forklifts plus manual installation techniques
- Phased installation: Strategic milestone targets achieved daily
Project Execution
Installation Timeline
Phase 1: Sunday 15th June – Saturday 21st June (Initial install)
Phase 2: Sunday 13th July – Friday 18th July (Event breakdown)
Daily Operations
The project demanded precision timing with specific daily panel installation targets. Our experienced team adapted to the unique beach environment, overcoming challenges including:
- Panel alignment issues requiring expert handling
- Sand storm conditions during extraction
- Coordination with underground utilities installation
Traffic Management
During the festival build and breakdown phases, the temporary road system supported:
- 50-100 vehicle passes daily during construction phases
- 24 trucks, 1 telehandler, 3 forklifts throughout the project
- Zero weight restrictions exceeded even with heavy crane operations
- 38,000 festival-goers attending over the three day event
Results & Impact
Operational Excellence
- 100% uptime throughout the 3-day festival
- Zero incidents or accidents reported across all phases
- Weather resilience maintained through challenging sand storm conditions
- Traffic capacity exceeded expectations with no system failures
